At least 45 people have been killed in air strikes by government forces in Afghanistan. The attack in the eastern part of the country killed Taliban members as well as many civilians.
Eight of the 45 killed were civilians, but local officials did not say whether all 36 were members of the Taliban, Reuters reported.
Ali Ahmad Fakir Yar, governor of the Adraskan district in the eastern province of Herat, said 45 people had been killed so far in airstrikes by security forces in the Kham Ziarat area on Wednesday. At least eight of them are civilians.
A spokesman for US forces in Afghanistan said they had not taken part in Wednesday's airstrikes.
The Afghan Defense Ministry said in a statement that it was investigating allegations of civilian casualties in attacks by Afghan forces in the area.
Habib Amini, a local official in the Gujarat district bordering Adraskan, confirmed the attack and said 45 people had been killed and many more injured.
A Taliban spokesman, Qari Muhammad Yusuf Ahmadi, said in a statement that two airstrikes in Herat had killed eight civilians and wounded 12 others.
